Those of you that read my blog frequently might remember my posting about my friend Nikki. The two of us, along with 27 other women, met because we were expecting babies at the same time, and we forged a friendship and lasting emotional bond. We are all very close. None of us knew how badly she would be needing our support and love. She had a baby boy about a week after Anna was born, but he only lived for 37 hours due to a very rare lung condition that could not be detected during pregnancy. If you would like to read a brief version of Nikki's story about her baby boy, Collins, you can find it here. His mother has a symbol for him, something to hold on to, something to remind her of her baby boy. It's a clover.
Within our little community of mothers, we decided that we wanted to do something in memory of Collins. What could be a more appropriate time than the upcoming St. Patrick's Day holiday? This is where you guys come in.
The Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep organization is a non-profit group of photographers that work nationwide within hospitals, serving grieving families. They provide a private portrait session and retouched photos at no charge, as an outreach to those that have lost a baby. This can do so much for the healing process, and NILMDTS is an extremely worthy cause to support.
We have recently launched a Clovers for Collins Facebook page. For a $5 donation, you can choose from several clovers, handmade by the girls in our group. Each one is unique, and there is a lot of love put into them all. Every penny of our profits will be donated to NILMDTS in Collins' memory. Please, please consider making a donation today, and spread the word to others. This is something we have put our whole hearts into, and it is so meaningful.
If you have children, please give them extra hugs and kisses.

Photobomb! 2-27-12
It's great that Anna has big brothers to show her how to play with toys.
It's also great that Nicholas manages to rip the knee in every pair of pants he has.
1-27-12
Zoe wanted to wear my "married hat" when she woke up one morning.
So (once I figured out what she was talking about), I dug my veil out of the closet and let her play with it.
2-1-12
Apparently, the cabinet doors weren't secure enough.
Adventures in Childproofing: The Zoe Edition.
2-1-12
It must be wedding season.
Ethan, the child bride. His intended? Nicholas.
(The wedding was eventually cancelled due to irreconcilable differences.)
2-2-12
Noodle monster!
2-8-12
Watching for Daddy.
2-12-12
Anna hates baby food, and when she didn't eat it, Zoe volunteered to finish it for her.
2-12-12
Don't turn your back, Mommy, or Anna will get the wipes.
2-16-12
Bad behavior = the boys don't get to play the Wii.
Ethan's solution, combined with a mini guilt trip: draw a picture of himself and Nicky playing the Wii, add a few tears, and Mommy will change her mind.
Didn't work.
2-16-12
Ethan, as Batgirl.
Oh, the blackmail just keeps rolling in...
2-17-12
Anna loved my Spanish rice.
So did her hair.
2-21-12
I didn't realize how long Anna's hair was until I did this!

What it's like to live with us: Part IV
EPISODE ONE: A FEW BUMPS IN THE ROAD
We are in the car, getting buckled in to go somewhere. I had previously explained to the boys (who can buckle themselves into their car seats) in great detail about where the chest clip should be. Nicholas was having trouble with this, so I used his nipples as a reference point.
Nicky is digging around in his shirt rather than buckling his belt.
ME: Nicholas, what in the world are you doing?
NICKY: I can't find those bumps!
ME: What bumps? Your nipples?
NICKY: Yes! I CAN'T find them!!
ME: I'll help you buckle up, okay?
NICKY: NO! I can't find them!
ME: Son, look for your nipples when we get home, okay? We need to leave now.
**********************************************************
EPISODE TWO: HE DID WHAT?
ME: Zoe? Do you know where Nicky is?
ZOE: No.
ME: Is he hiding? Did you see where he went.
ZOE: No. He buh-petered.
ME: What? Buh-petered??
ZOE: Yeah, he buh-petered.
ME (head swirling in confusion): I have no idea what you're talking about.
I have to think for a second...
ME: Oh! He disappeared?
ZOE: Yeah.
**********************************************************
EPISODE THREE: I FEEL PRETTY
Daddy is in the bathroom with Zoe, helping her brush her teeth before bed.
NATHAN: You're so pretty, Zoe.
ZOE: You're not a pretty boy because you didn't let me brush my teeth.
**********************************************************
EPISODE FOUR: WHERE IS MY MIND?
Ethan comes running into the living room and hops onto the couch.
Ethan comes running into the living room and hops onto the couch.
ETHAN: Something made a noise in my room, Mama!
ME: What was it? Was it outside?
ETHAN: I don't know, but it scared my mind right outta my head!
**********************************************************
EPISODE FIVE: DARKNESS FALLS
We're at my in-laws' house, getting ready to go home. It's early evening, and the sun is starting to set. I hate driving in the dark because I can't see well and it makes me nervous.
ME: Come on guys, let's go! It's getting dark.
We finally get into the car and start making our way home.
ZOE: Mama, do you like to drive in the dark?
ME: Nope. I don't like it at all.
ZOE: Yeah, me either.
**********************************************************
EPISODE SIX: THE WEDDING IS OFF
Ethan is all dressed up in some of Zoe's princess garb, complete with jewelry and "hair" made from a blanket. He marches into the kitchen and announces that he's ready to get married. Apparently, he is set to marry Nicholas.
ETHAN (walking back to his room): Come on, Nicky!
Nicholas runs toward him, then passes him, smacking his arm as he flies by.
ETHAN (after a brief pause): I don't want to marry you.
**********************************************************
EPISODE SIX: NO BUTTS ABOUT IT
One day, we were going to watch a movie. I was holding Anna, and only had one free hand to open the case and insert the disk. It was a little smudgy, so I decided to wipe it off. The closest thing to me? Anna's butt. The kids thought this was hilarious, and I'll probably never live it down. Fast forward a few weeks...
ETHAN: The movie is skipping! Can you fix it, Mama?
ZOE: You probably should wipe it on Anna's butt.
**********************************************************
EPISODE SEVEN: IT'S LEFT, RIGHT?
We're eating dinner and discussing handedness.
**********************************************************
We're eating dinner and discussing handedness.
ZOE ( holding up left hand): Is this my right hand?
NATHAN: No, the other one.
ZOE (holding up right hand): This is my right hand.
NATHAN: Yes.
ZOE (holding up left hand): And this is my wrong hand.**********************************************************

The Zoo...(again...)
We go to the San Antonio Zoo a lot. A LOT. I know I've posted many, many pictures here of our previous trips, but you'll just have to endure some more. In fact, I'm under strict orders (Hi, Jess!) to post about our most recent zoo experience.
My mom took a (much needed) day off from work Tuesday so we could go check out some animals. It had been a while since we were able to do this, so I was super excited. I didn't tell the kids about it until we were leaving the house, because I didn't want to disappoint them if something came up and altered our plans.
There was literally no traffic, and the zoo was pretty vacant. We pretty much had the place to ourselves!
Zoe was being a little scaredy-cat and wouldn't come up there at first. Grammy had to bribe her with fruit snacks. Yes, I'm serious.
That's better. Doesn't she look thrilled?
Flamingos!
(I can totally see why people think the boys are twins.)
Anna was having so much fun looking at all the animals!
A spectacled bear.
Nicholas was trying to see how much size difference there was between his hand and a grizzly bear's paw.
"Whoa, Mama! That's really BIG!"
Komodo Dragon
(or as my children call it, "The Big, Ugly Lizard.")
"Are we lost? First, we saw the flamingos. Then, we saw the bears. Now we're right here. If we go all the way over to this part, we can find the lions and the tigers."
Who needs a tour guide?
A little window shopping.
"No, we can't buy anything right now because Mommy doesn't want to lug it around the entire zoo. Contrary to popular belief, I am not a pack mule."
They really, really wanted to take this picture.
Can you tell?
One of those rare days at the SA Zoo when the hippos were actually showing their faces!
"They're SO FAT!!"
Nicky's favorite, the crocodile.
"Oh, no! He's coming!!"
Granddad, Zoe, and Nicky.
Monkey.
(I hate monkeys. Just so you know.)
Ethan really likes the okapi.
The only elephant that you can ride at the zoo these days.
When I was little, they actually had elephant rides. It was fun!
Obviously, it's too dangerous, so they don't do them anymore.
Anna was really watching the elephant. I think she might've been worried that it was going to come our way.
This lady was smart. She was spinning that metal keg around and making it dispense little treats. It only worked if she did it a certain way. We watched her for a long time.
This guy was really frisky, and kept doing laps while we were there. All I have to say is: I hope I never get chased by a rhino. They're really fast!
After years and years of waiting, the zoo finally has two new zebras!
All those stripes are really itchy, I guess.
Roar.
Look at the little joey! So cute!
Poke, poke, poke.
Granddad was teasing the kids and telling them that the porcupines in the zoo were soft and cuddly. Thanks, Dad.
Dad took the kids in to see the Lory exhibit, but those ear-piercing shrieks are too much for me.
He had quite a crowd of kids watching him feed the birds.
Exploring.
There is a small river running under those rocks. I remember Dad helping me cross in that very spot when I was a little girl. Awwww...
Anna and Grammy.
Funny story. We went into a building that housed several mini-exhibits, and while I was occupied with looking at the naked mole rats (ew!), Ethan ran a little ahead and around a corner. All of a sudden, we heard a blood-curdling scream, and he came charging back around the corner and into Grammy's arms. He was yelling, "Help me! Help me! I didn't know it was gonna be there and I went around the corner and it scared me!!" I peeked around to see what had scared him so badly, and saw this:
The offending reptile.
Scary iguana.
Ethan was hysterical for a few seconds, until he realized there was a thick piece of (very clean) glass between us and the lizard. Once he calmed down, he wanted his picture taken with his new buddy.
All better.
This guy was following the kids around like a puppy. It was really cute!
Lazy tortoise.
Checking out the prairie dogs.
This turned into a shoving match.
One of the play areas for the kids is a campground. Zoe was making us some dinner.
Anna finally had enough and drifted off.
Hissssss...
(I hate snakes. Yuck.)
(I hate snakes. Yuck.)
Shopping. Grammy is a sucker.
Heading to the Train Depot.
Waiting for Anna's first train ride.
It's a rite of passage.
Zoe skipped her nap. Can you tell?
Home again, home again...
We had fun! The kids were remarkably well-behaved, the weather was perfect, and it was just a great day overall. We're already trying to figure out when we can go back!
